Crafted from solid oak and shaped with sharp chamfered edges to both front and rear faces, this contemporary mantel clock forms part of a special collaboration between The Humble Woodshed and fellow gallery artist Bridget Derc.
The warm natural character of the oak contrasts beautifully against the vibrant handcrafted centrepiece, creating a striking balance between simplicity and intricate detail. Laser-engraved numerals and elegant black hands complete the clean, contemporary aesthetic.
The intricate polymer clay centrepiece was created using a highly skilled millefiori-inspired technique traditionally associated with Venetian and Murano glasswork. Each design is individually handmade, meaning no two pieces are ever exactly alike.
The process involves blending and conditioning coloured polymer clay before carefully layering, shaping and reducing patterned “canes” — similar in principle to traditional glass millefiori or sticks of rock — whilst preserving the intricate design running through the clay. These canes are then sliced, assembled into geometric patterns, burnished by hand, cured, sanded and polished to create the finished artwork.
Bridget’s work takes inspiration from textile repeat patterns, mosaic forms and Islamic geometry, resulting in richly detailed kaleidoscope-like designs full of colour and movement.
The solid oak body has been carefully finished to highlight the natural grain while allowing the centrepiece artwork to remain the focal point of the piece. More than simply a clock, this collaboration celebrates two different crafts brought together through a shared passion for handmade design and craftsmanship.
