Hello, I'm Mike, the maker behind The Humble Woodshed.
Wood has fascinated me for as long as I can remember. Every piece has its own character, its own grain, its own imperfections and its own story waiting to be discovered.
Long before a tool touches the timber, I'm already walking around it, viewing it from every angle, imagining what it could become and allowing the wood itself to inspire the final design.
No two pieces ever begin the same way, and that's exactly how I like it.
I'm a carpenter by trade, but The Humble Woodshed was born in 2019 during one of the most difficult periods of my life. As I rebuilt my confidence with the love and support of my family, the care of an excellent GP, together with therapy and medication, woodworking became far more than a hobby—it became part of my recovery. What started as a way to heal gradually grew into the business you see today.
Working from my small garden workshop in Gloucestershire, I create handcrafted clocks, furniture and home décor that celebrate the natural beauty of timber.I often combine traditional woodworking with carefully chosen resin details, but the wood is always the star of each piece. Its grain, knots, cracks and natural features guide every design, ensuring that every creation is completely unique.
I don't work from production lines or manufacture in batches. Every piece is individually designed and handcrafted, often evolving as I work to reveal the beauty already hidden within the timber. I believe the finest pieces are created by working with nature rather than trying to control it.
There's a real excitement in seeing a beautiful piece of wood and imagining what it could become. Sometimes my original idea changes completely as I work, simply because the timber tells me a better story. That creative journey is one of the things I enjoy most, and I hope it shines through in every finished piece.
Wherever possible, I use locally sourced and sustainable timber, alongside reclaimed materials that deserve a second life. Whether it's a statement wall clock, a handcrafted piece of furniture or a thoughtful gift, my aim is always the same: to reveal the beauty already hidden within the timber and create something I would be proud to have in my own home—something that celebrates nature and is made to be treasured for years to come.
